Understanding Depression

Person experiencing low mood Depression affects mood, thinking, energy, and sleep. Common symptoms include low mood, loss of interest or pleasure, fatigue, changes in sleep or appetite, difficulty concentrating, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, and thoughts of death or suicide.

At Astute, we help you understand the patterns that maintain depression and build practical skills and routines that support relief and recovery.

What Is Depression? (Psychoeducation)

Depression (Major Depressive Disorder) is more than feeling sad. It’s a medical condition involving changes in brain–body systems that affect motivation, sleep, appetite, and thinking.

  • Types: Major Depressive Disorder, Persistent Depressive Disorder (dysthymia), Peripartum/Postpartum Depression, Seasonal Pattern, and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder.
  • Common cycle: low mood → reduced activity/withdrawal → fewer positive experiences → deeper low mood. Breaking this cycle with small, meaningful actions is key.
  • Treatment works: behavioral activation, CBT, IPT, ACT/mindfulness, lifestyle supports (sleep, movement), and—when appropriate—medication. Many people improve with a coordinated plan.
